After his honorable discharge, John earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

During law school, he returned to Alaska each summer to intern with public advocacy offices, solidifying his expertise in Alaska's unique legal landscape. He won his first DUI trial as a law student, setting the foundation for a career devoted to defending clients charged with driving while impaired and other criminal matters.
After earning his Juris Doctor, John served as an assistant public defender and later as an assistant public advocate. These roles provided invaluable trial and courtroom experience, allowing him to gain experience in the intricacies of Alaska's criminal justice system and build strong relationships within the legal community.
